Fashion for the big and beautiful hits catwalk

MODELLING can hardly be noted for its diversity of bodies but one woman is on a mission to change that.

Failepou Peni of Fairfield West has a vision to embrace fuller women in the fashion world with her own new label designed for the bigger figure — ‘Grace on Lepou’.

An official launch of the new range will be showcased in a fashion show in May using size 12 to 28 models.

Ms Peni said there was a need in the market to target fuller women like herself who found it difficult to fit into the popular trends now.

“I’m big and tall which can be difficult to find clothes I love and I’m sure there are many more women out there struggling with that,” Ms Peni said.

“There’s limited stories out there for us which can be hard to find what I want. I love fashion and I want to be able to embrace it. Why should we wear dull clothes that aren’t fashionable just because we are plus-size?”

She said the show was all about celebrating a woman’s curves, their style and full-figure to empower them through fashion.

Failepou Peni with emerging designer Danitta Fretton say retailers aren’t targeting plus size women which creates a need in the market.

“This show is about her, the woman who is not afraid to embrace who she is as an individual no matter what shape or form,” she said.

Ms Peni said she wanted women to know there’s a brand out there for them. “We have models which represent real women with different shapes and curves.”

Six emerging designers will be showcased including 18-year-old Danitta Fretton of Fairfield West who designs traditional pacific islander garments worn at cultural events.

Danitta said she had always admired the work of Fai and felt grateful to be a part of the show where her designs could be recognised by the larger market.

“Fai’s my mentor, she has taught me to not just think pacific, but to think broader as a person and a designer,” Danitta said.

The fashion show will be held on Saturday, May 28 at the Novotel Norwest Hotel starting at 6pm.
