Bea Åkerlund is a huge name in celebrity fashion, and she’s behind a lot of pop music’s most iconic looks of the 21st century.
From the outfits in Lady Gaga‘s Paparazzi film clip, to Madonna‘s Roman emperor-themed Super Bowl look, to the yellow dress in Beyonce’s Lemonade, Bea Åkerlund was behind them all.
The Swedish fashion activist – she no longer wants to be known as a stylist (she wrote a Lenny Letter about it) – has now turned her mind to dressing the home, creating a collection with IKEA.
“I come from a fashion background, so when I was approached by IKEA I wanted to bring to life what I do and create pieces that were clothing that can become furniture,” says Åkerlund of the collaboration at IKEA’s Democratic Design Day in Älmhult.
“I’m a costume designer and I like to think I create from the bottom up. I like a theme and I like to create a story in everything I do. With IKEA I wanted to create a story of Bea Åkerlund and I think you see that in my collection because it’s part of me. It has all of me in it.”
The range not only has her signature style – like the top hat-shaped glass bowl – but really reflects Bea herself. The lip-shaped cushion is based on Bea’s own pout.
The other tell-tale sign that the Omedelbar collection has Åkerlund written all over it is that the range is open to interpretation. “Really, my glass hat that I made, you could do whatever you want with it. You could fill it with apples and oranges, or you could use it as a champagne cooler, or whatever you want it to be or whatever your imagination wants it to be.”
Omedelbar will be in Australian IKEA stores next year and prices aren’t yet confirmed, but for now, scroll through a snapshot of the collection and get excited for how strong your objet game is going to be in 2018.
