Meet Stacey Syiem from Shillong, a designer who creates cultural waves in the UK fashion world

‘My culture goes where I go’ is the main tag line of a UK based Fashion Brand — Little Hill People, the company that promotes North-East Indian handloom, and its efforts to showcase the culture of the region is about to touch new heights, thanks to the person behind Little Hill People, Stacey Syiem.

Little Hill People is making its mark this year in the prestigious Super Model England- World Fashion Show.  Supermodel England is England’s Top Model Search competition.

The Beauty Pageant is known for promoting aspiring models and designers in the UK and serves as the perfect launch pad for emerging fashion houses. The Supermodel England 2016 Final will take place on November 12th 2016 at The Fairway Hotel, Barnsley in a Black Tie Gala.

During the Supermodel England Live Grand Final, the models will showcase The Little Hill People Designer collection.

Little Hill People is a unique designer brand that focuses on bringing out the richness and the variety of the ancient tribal art craft of the several north-east Indian tribes.

Designer Stacey Syiem says, “North East India is an exotic place where tribal artisans living close to Nature has enabled them to develop their own distinctive style in clothing and accessories. The North-East Indian tribes are known to make ample use of natural products for clothing and accessories. While a large majority of tribal shoppers are moving more and more towards machine-made commercial branded clothes, Sustainable  Handmade products is  the new change in the Western Luxury market . It is for ethical shoppers who love Fair Trade, Handmade clothes and accessories. Colours, craftsmanship and unique blend with modern fashion flair.”

Stacey Syiem a designer born and brought up in Mawlai Syllaikariah, Shillong is the person behind Little Hill People. Her love for the region and for fashion has combined to give the world the unique combination of designs in the form of Little Hill People.

Stacey Syiem is a sustainable Fashion designer who has spent the last three years designing apparel and accessories made from traditional hand-loom materials of the indigenous tribes of Northeast India.

“My mission is to bring the beauty of my handloom heritage to UK and Europe, and to improve the lives of local artisans who create the textiles and other materials I use in my creations,” she said.

Little Hill People brings out the hidden potential in ancient art and weaving of the north-east Indian tribes. The fashion brand has been turning tradition into some fierce bags, clothes and accessories.

Always making use of handmade products that are directly bought from independent weavers and self-help groups of the region, Little Hill People gives tribal artisans a platform. In this beauty pageant show, Little Hill People is going to make a mark with their unique and out of the block designs.

This year they will showcase their beautiful collection inspired by The Khasi Dhara a traditional dress worn by the matriarchal Khasi women of Meghalaya and the Naga Shawl with woven story. The sheen and feel of the fabric is very beautiful and feminine. .

“There is a lot of interest in Indian handicrafts and designs in the UK. My collection fuses traditional Northeastern textile with modern design. Each piece is accompanied by a story and description of where the fabric comes from and what it is traditionally used for,” Syiem said.

Stacey also expressed keeness to support the weavers who produce the textiles and currently uses businesses in UK to create the collection pieces for her designs while further hoping that with the help of the Indian and state government, she would be able to set up a manufacturing unit in her home town to provide a sustainable income to the people in her state and provide jobs for as many as she can.

Furthermore, she informed that the event will discover two national winners: World Supermodel England, who will represent England at the World Supermodel international final and Top Model of England, who will represent England at the Top Model of the World international final! Both winners will also gain representation by Gap Models, London, as well as other incredible prizes and opportunities.
