Shoe and accessories shop Peachy Keen opens in Braddon

Fashion boutique Rebel Muse has been a popular fixture since opening in the Ori Building – and now it has a younger sister.

Also owned by Rebel Muse’s Alicia Xyrakis, Peachy Keen is a shoe and accessory boutique, which has opened up in the former Unit Concepts store in the Ori Building.

Xyrakis said it was something that was always on the cards, and planned for further down the track in the yet-to-be-built Palko building across Lonsdale Street. But when Nik Bulum closed Unit Concepts in July this year, the plan was moved forward.

“It just felt like a natural progression from Rebel Muse – it’s such a small space and we didn’t have much space for shoes and accessories and it was often something that got missed out because when you go to a clothing shop you don’t have shoes on your mind,” Xyrakis said.

Peachy Keen stocks all kinds of women’s shoes, from sneakers and sandals right through to show-stopping stilettos, at a range of price points, plus there’s hats, handbags and jewellery.

A brand to look out for?

“We’ve got Dylan Kain which is definitely a must-have bag and accessory brand at the moment. They’re half based in Melbourne and half based in New York,” she said.

“They do lots of cute little side satchels. The leather quality is amazing – it feels like a luxury brand but it’s more in the mid-range price-point.”

If the name conjures up imagery from Grease, that’s exactly what it’s inspired by.

“There’s a line in it where Rizzo says, ‘Peachy keen, jellybean,’ and that’s just where I heard the saying and I’ve been a big Grease fan since I was young and it’s just a saying I’ve always had in mind,” she said.

“And I just thought it was cute – it makes sense for shoes and accessories to be a bit fun and playful.”

The store opened on Friday, with a grand opening with balloons and fairy floss planned for Saturday.
