Vastra 2016: Apparel exporters have mixed reactions

Although the Vastra exhibition is for textile and apparel sourcing, but this time around there were many booths of machines and accessories suppliers as well

Recently concluded 5th edition of Vastra exhibition, a Jaipur (India)-based international textile and apparel sourcing fair, organized by RIICO and FICCI, has once again disappointed most of the exhibitors – apparel exporters from Jaipur and a few from other parts of the country. One of the reasons behind that is buyers were not offered air ticket. Apparel exporters/participants are divided on the overall fair and do have different opinions…

Apparel Resources interacted with many of the participants… Ravi Poddar, Partner, Cheer Sagar, Jaipur and President, Garment Exporters Association of Rajasthan (GEAR) said that key overseas sourcing fairs around the world offer air tickets to buyers. But this time Vastra didn’t get Government support, and without funds how can one make such projects successful.

Vijay Singh Sengar, Director, Shilpayan Décor, Jaipur however has a different view. In his words: “I don’t think that not offering air tickets to the buyers is the reason behind less footfall. Genuine buyers who have to buy the products will come on their own expenses too. FICCI is providing them accommodation; additionally organizers have called buyers from IHGF, Greater Noida as well. The point is lot many fairs are being organized simultaneously while buyers have their own limitations. I think that timing of the fair was not right this time.”

It was also observed that some of the exporters want to change Vastra into a ‘domestic’ event… “Somehow I feel that this show is not required as we have enough events in Delhi and Greater Noida. Changing this show into a domestic event and invite domestic retailers, brands and other such stakeholders will be good for Jaipur apparel industry. The region has already proved itself as a ladies garments manufacturing hub,” said Vimal Shah, MD, Goodwill Impex, Jaipur.
